ISO
14001
All over World, concerns are
growing for maintaining and
improving the quality of the
environment and protecting
human health, organizations
of all sizes are
increasingly turning their
attention to the potential
environmental impacts of
their activities, products
or services. The
environmental performance of
an organization is of
increasing importance to
internal and external
interested parties.
Achieving sound
environmental performance
requires organizational
commitment to a systematic
approach and to continual
improvement of its
Environmental Management
System (EMS). ISO
14001 ENVIRONMENTAL
MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
CERTIFICATION
ISO 14001, established in
1996, is a voluntary
international standard
focusing on the systemic
management of an
organization’s environmental
impacts. Establishing an
Environmental Management
System (EMS) can positively
influence the effectiveness
of a site’s EHS program and
provide long-term reduction
of pollution.
Environmental Management is
a tool designed to assist an
organization to remain in
touch with the environmental
interactions and
consequential impacts of its
activities and products. It
provides the organization
with programs and procedures
to achieve due diligence in
meeting regulatory
requirements. It also
promotes continual
improvement throughout the
organization, and
consequently, often results
in better environmental
performance.
BASIC ELEMENTS
The basic elements of an
effective environmental
management system will
enable an organization to:
• Establish an appropriate
environmental policy;
• Identify its most
significant environmental
impacts;
• Identify relevant
legislative, regulatory and
industry specific
requirements;
• Set appropriate
environmental objectives and
targets;
• Establish programs to
implement the environmental
policy and achieve
objectives and targets, and;
• Continuously improve the
environmental performance
through improvement of the
EMS.
